In November of 2013 I was on deployment and I did not have access to a relaxer and I was long overdue. I decided to challenge myself to go perm free until we got back. I mean, its not like I needed a perm to survive right? We returned two months later and my hair was a mess. Instead of giving in and getting a relaxer I decided to just put it in braids and let it grow out. I was unaware but at the time my hair was very unhealthy and the braids were a good protective style. While having a conversation with my friend I told her that I was thinking about going natural but I was sure if my hair would be suitable for being natural. I didn’t think I would still be beautiful being natural with my big hair and all. She then said to me that at that point I needed to make a decision of whether or not I was going to relax my hair. Relaxing it would simply lay down all that new growth and not relaxing it will simply cause the relaxed ends to break off. Referring to the big chop as naturalistas call it, I did not have the guts to do it. So, I simply let the relaxed ends grow out and cut them off when I had quite a bit of new growth. While I was transitioning (another naturalista term) I had a personality transition as well. Initially I was uncomfortable with wearing my natural hair. Since I was eight years old, I had straight hair. Embracing my beauty was quite the challenge. Then, it hit me. My hair and society does not define my beauty. I am a queen. I hold myself to the highest standard and my hair merely enhances my natural beauty inside and out. Big hair means big personality which I definitely have. Natural Hair is so versatile. I can wear it big (afro), straight, curly, and in so many different styles. So, with all of this being said, if you are relaxed natural or anywhere between, don’t let society tell you are beautiful if you have straight or curly hair. You are a beautiful queen and don’t ever forget that. And for all those contemplating going natural, I highly encourage you to do so. It can change your outlook on life. It certainly changed mine.

Peace and Blessings,

Shaniqua
